Rick Macklin isn’t a former NBA player but earned fans in Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, and Klay Thompson. After all, they have all trusted their physical condition on him, and he always came through with the best treatments for his clients.
On Tuesday, the San Jose Sharks won the Draft Lottery and are ready to make Macklin their no.1 pick. Macklin, 18, forward, is college hockey’s youngest Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner.
It certainly feels like a full-circle moment for Macklin, who previously played for the Jr Sharks team in 2019.

Macklin Celebrini’s parents, Rick and Robyn Celebrini, never forced their kids to choose professional sports as their careers. The former soccer players expected their two oldest sons to thrive in the same sport, but as they lived in a hockey-crazed country, only one outcome seemed viable.
In her heyday, Robyn Celebrini was an excellent collegiate soccer player but didn’t pursue a professional career. The mother-of-four has been pictured during several of the Golden State Warriors’ victory parades.
She has kept herself away from social media, with her Instagram handle private and Twitter last used in 2018. During his ESPN interview, Macklin credited his mom for keeping the family together.

Rick Celebrini, the former Canadian soccer player, played at Capilano University for two years before transferring to the University of British Columbia.
A defender, Rick not only focused on sports while at British Columbia but was also able to get his PhD in physical therapy.
During his time in British Columbia, Rick led his side to four consecutive Canadian soccer championships and also played for Canada’s under-20 national team in the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship.
Rick’s sports medicine and performance career began in the early 90s. But he also tried maintaining a professional soccer career with the Vancouver 86ers, which failed as he kept getting injured and eventually dedicated his entire time towards his other professional career.
He was part of the Canadian men’s Alpine Ski team at the 1994 and 2002 Olympics and served as the medical manager and chief therapist during the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Before making his way to the NBA, Rick worked in the league that his son is ready to dominate in the future. Rick was the director of rehabilitation for the Vancouver Canucks from 2014 until 2018.
And that is when the Golden State Warriors came calling for his service. With his family, Rick moved to the Bay Area from their North Vancouver home.
At the Golden States, Rick is the Sports Medicine and Performance Director. The older Celebrini’s love for sports medicine began when he was a teenager and had fractured his ankle playing soccer.
In 2013, Celebrini co-founded the MultiSport Center of Excellence in Burnaby, British Columbia. The facility picked up pace, and in no time, it became home to several NBA and NHL athletes. And this is how he first came in contact with the Warriors.

Macklin Benefited From His Dad’s Client
After Rick began operating the facility, several top athletes became his clients. But Macklin’s favorite client of his dad was Steve Nash, whom he called Uncle Steve.
Macklin grew up watching Steve Nash train continuously for two to three hours with his dad. At a young age, he saw what it takes to become a top athlete.
Later, he also saw NHL players like Mike Smith and Ryan Kesler train, which further fueled him to follow his passion for hockey.
Though he never forced his sons to become athletes, Rick couldn’t help but teach his kids “physical literacy.” He would gamify physical activity for his sons.
During holidays, Rick would make his kids sprint and hop through sand. If they were waiting to catch a flight, Rick would set up a sprint circuit for the kids in the terminal.
Rick’s motto for his kids would be, “What did you do today to improve yourself?”
In his interview with The Athletic on Tuesday, Rick talked about his son being the first overall pick in the NHL draft. Rick said he would feel lucky if San Jose Sharks got hold of Macklin, as it would not scatter the family, keeping them intact in the Bay area.
Macklin Celebrini’s Siblings Are Also Destined To Be Athletes
The 2024 overall No. 1 draft pick, Macklin Celebrini’s family, has no NHL bloodline. And now, only a year apart, they have two of them.
Macklin’s older brother, Aiden Celebrini, was a sixth-round draft pick in 2023. Born on October 26, 2004, Aiden is 20and stands 6 feet 1 inches (185 cm).
Unlike his brother, Aiden plays defense and recently finished his freshman year at Boston University. He appeared in 38 games, blocked 23 shots, scored one goal, and provided five assists, totaling six points.
Before he was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the draft, Aiden played for Burnaby Winter Club in 2018. He also starred for the San Jose Jr. Sharks team in 2019 before playing for Shattuck St. Mary’s and Brooks Bandits.
Macklin Celebrini’s Youngest Brother Is Also A Superstar In Making
Aiden and Macklin’s younger brother, RJ, has followed in their footsteps. Born in 2012, RJ already has hockey fans making highlight clips for him on YouTube.
The young superstar stars for the Tri-Valley Bulls 12AA team and finished the season with 46 points, scoring 34 goals and providing 12 assists in 26 games.
The youngster also played for the HPL Flyers 2012 AAA team and finished the Challenge Cup 2012 Edmonton Tournament with ten goals and 14 points in six games.
The three boys also have a sister named Charlize Celebrini, an athlete. She plays tennis and is currently ranked 382 in the ITF Junior Ranking.
